The Goethe-Institut Boston offers internships to undergraduate students (junior/senior year), graduate students, or recently graduated students.* Interns receive insight into the work of an organization such as the Goethe-Institut, participate in the planning and implementation of cultural programs, and take on tasks in public relations/social media, and German educational outreach departments. Requirements

The following are required in order to qualify for consideration for an internship at the Goethe-Institut Boston:
  • Excellent German language proficiency and/or German citizenship 
  • good sense of the modern German culture scene (desired)
  • Interest in educational policy/pedagogical issues
  • Willingness to work together with students of different age groups
  • Readiness to work independently/execute routine tasks
  • Excellent Computer Skills
  • completed (or on track to complete) university degree in the humanities, linguistics, arts, social sciences, or related degree field at the Bachelor's or Master's level 
  • For those without American citizenship: a valid visa. We currently work with Cultural Vistas to secure visas for interns coming from abroad. *In order to acquire a visa for an internship, interns must either currently be enrolled in a course of study or no more than 12 months post-graduation at the start date of the internship program.

Please note that applications are considered often between 6 months and a year in advance; we can seldom accommodate applications received on short notice.

As housing in the USA and obtaining a visa are associated with considerable costs, we would ask you to consider your financial needs before applying. 

The Goethe-Institut Boston requests the following application documents (electronically):
  • Resume or CV
  • Cover Letter (please indicate the time frame and department for which you are applying) 
  • Letter of recommendation (must be written by a university teacher or lecturer, should not exceed one page, should give a personal impression of your performance and briefly explain why you are suitable for an internship abroad, if applicable)
  • Certificates and references, if available
