"German Insights" Captures History at the German Emigration Center in Bremerhaven

New German cultural course coming to the US in the fall

Bremerhaven, Germany – July 31, 2025 — The Nordsee-Zeitung has published a new article highlighting a recent visit by the Goethe-Institut Washington to the German Emigration Center (Deutsches Auswandererhaus) in Bremerhaven. The visit marked a key moment in the development of German Insights, a new cultural course set to launch in the United States this fall. The course is designed to introduce U.S.-based learners to German culture, history, and contemporary life through engaging multimedia content.

The Goethe-Institut team filmed on-site at the museum, capturing immersive visuals and interviews that will be featured in the course. The German Emigration Center, with its rich storytelling and historical exhibits, was chosen as a central location to explore the shared migration history between Germany and the United States.
With the cultural course "German Insights", we want to present Germany as it is today—modern, diverse, and forward-looking—while also creating space for personal connections. By exploring themes like emigration and heritage, we hope to resonate with Americans who may discover links to their own family histories in Germany.
Annette Baran, social media expert at the Goethe-Institut Washington
The museum, Europe’s largest dedicated to emigration, offers a deeply personal look at the journeys of millions of Germans who left Bremerhaven for new lives abroad. These stories will help illustrate the human dimension of migration and cultural exchange in the course.
Although we frequently collaborate with film and TV crews from across Europe, teams from the United States remain a rare occurrence.
Magdalena Gerwien, press spokesperson for the German Emigration Center
German Insights will be available as an online course starting in fall 2025. Tatjana Brode, Head of Information at the Goethe-Institut North America, summarizes the idea: to provide learners, educators, and cultural enthusiasts across the U.S. with German roots or an interest in Germany a modern image of Germany through well-told stories and interactive videos.
